Kairaan Kika’s work is grounded in citation, constantly drawing from the archetypal, foundational imagery of contemporary American popular culture, particularly film and television. Through video and sculpture, Kairaan Kika reconstructs spaces of speculative fiction that explore preexisting visual worlds. By foregrounding the mechanisms of representation, gesture, and framing, the works question how meaning is produced and how certain ideas come to appear natural. The practice takes a critical stance toward the white supremacist, capitalist, and patriarchal foundations underlying these images, mobilizing their own aesthetic codes in order to expose their logics of reproduction.
