Born in 1997, Ciel Sourdeau is a French filmmaker and performer based in Geneva. A graduate of HEAD – Genève in 2022, Sourdeau moves freely between cinema, music and the performing arts. Their practice is rooted in collective creation: films emerge from fantastical speculations inspired by people and places encountered in everyday life. DIY is never an end in itself nor merely the sign of limited resources; rather, it becomes a way of playfully bending reality and opening up new worlds.
Following Sad Cowboy Platonic Love (2021) and Sky Rogers: Manager of Stars (2024), presented at the Locarno Film Festival, Double Extraction de Nibards (Double Chesticle Extraction) continues this exploration. Sourdeau's films are playgrounds where popular cinema, drag, science fiction and comedy collide, joyfully dismantling cinematic genres. Generous, playful and profoundly collaborative, their work reminds us that there is something deeply beautiful in pursuing an imagined alternative all the way through—however imperfect, improbable or delightfully absurd it may be.

Entirely self-produced, with almost no budget, the film turns this economy of means into a genuine strength. Modelling clay, ketchup, props left deliberately visible: the artifice of filmmaking is fully embraced. Ciel Sourdeau hijacks the conventions of the instructional video, body horror and experimental cinema to create a trans-explosive, performative trifle. Beneath the humour, however, lies something more tender: cinema becomes a space where lived experience can be replayed, displaced and transformed. Here, DIY is not simply an aesthetic choice but a form of self-determination, in a context where trans* people continue to face profound barriers to accessing gender-affirming healthcare at every level.
